Sky Citizen is a common, yet incorrect, name for Star Citizen, but don’t worry, this is the guide to help you start your “Sky Citizen” adventure in Star Citizen!
There are four steps that you need to take to start your adventure as a Sky Citizen in Star Citizen:
Star Citizen is an epic, futuristic MMO and space simulation game under development by Roberts Space Industries. You can currently play in a single star system, Stanton, filled with planets, moons, and space stations, but Star Citizen will soon have multiple star systems that you can explore. Star Citizen is a sandbox where players can go anywhere and do anything if they prepare and are willing to deal with the consequences of their actions.
There are many ways for players to “earn a living” in the Star Citizen universe. Lawful players can take on dangerous combat missions in the skies and space as well as on the ground to remove criminal threats or they can play as outlaws and steal a living on the edges of society. Players can also pursue more peaceful means to earn credits in Star Citizen. They can courier packages between locations, haul cargo from station to station, salvage the wrecks of destroyed vessels, or prospect asteroid belts and remote regions of planets to mine valuable ores.
Finally, players can use their hard-earned credits to buy new weapons, armor, ships, and eventually, hangars, apartments, and bases around the Star Citizen universe. With the freedom to go anywhere and strike a living, there are countless unique possibilities for Star Citizen players to make the game their own.
Since the development of Star Citizen started with the original Kickstarter in 2012, the game has been about more than just being a flight simulation or space simulation. The developers spoke of creating a universe where players can “reclaim the stars” and “find your own fortune in the stars, wherever your spaceship takes you”. The name Star Citizen describes the aspirations of the game - to allow players to explore the possibilities across multiple star systems – better than “sky citizen”.
Sky Citizen is not a specific role or gameplay loop that you can play in Star Citizen, but you could play Star Citizen as a Sky Citizen by making a living a single planet. For example, you can set up an apartment in a major city or find a place in the wilderness to land your ship each night. Sky Citizen players can take courier delivery missions and FPS defense missions, or even trade between settlements, cities, and distribution centers. Eventually, Sky Citizen players will be able to make a land claim and build their own base on a planet! Let’s follow the adventures of a day in the life of an example Sky Citizen.
The Sky Citizen player logs in and their character wakes up in their RSI Aurora MR that they landed in a forest on microTech. The Sky Citizen checks their mobiGlas for any new missions and finds a package delivery mission for some easy credits to start their day. The Sky Citizen starts the engines on their RSI Aurora MR and flies to a settlement a couple hundred kilometers away to pick up the small package.
As the Sky Citizen approaches the settlement to pick up package, they check for any nearby pirates or other outlaws. These remote settlements are filled with people living on the edges of the law, and more than once the Sky Citizen stumbled into a dangerous situation that they barely escaped alive. Fortunately, no unexpected ships are at the settlement, and the Sky Citizen lands at a nearby clearing. The Sky Citizen walks to the settlement shop, retrieves the package, and climbs back aboard their ship.
Dust swirls around the RSI Aurora MR as it lifts off, and the Sky Citizen climbs to cruising altitude. This package needs to be delivered to a mining facility owned by Shubin Interstellar, a megacorporation in the Star Citizen universe. The mining facility is a couple hundred kilometers away, so the Sky Citizen climbs higher for a faster cruising speed to make the trip go by faster. After about ten minutes, the mining facility is in sight, and the Sky Citizen makes their descent and lands on one of the landing pads.
The Sky Citizen carries the package through the airlock into the mining facility commodity shop and places the package in the package handling machine. The machine closes its door and processes the package. The Sky Citizen receives a notification from their mobiGlas that the mission completed and they received their payout. As the Sky Citizen walks out to the pad, they spend some of their credits to refuel their RSI Aurora MR, settle back into the pilot’s seat, and flick their mobiGlas back up and look for the next mission.
Suddenly, a priority alert flashes on the Sky Citizen’s mobiGlas – an underground facility is under attack and needs help. While this mission is more dangerous than the package delivery mission, the payout is much better, and the Sky Citizen accepts the facility defense mission. The Sky Citizen checks the facility’s location and sees that it is on the opposite side of microTech, too far for simple atmospheric flight.
The Sky Citizen takes off again and climbs to the edge of the atmosphere. As they spool up the ship quantum drive, the Sky Citizen points the ship at the mission location and calibrates the drive to go to that location. As soon as the calibration completes, the Sky Citizen engages the quantum drive. The Sky Citizen watches the planet microTech go by below them, and their ship briefly flies through space as the quantum drive and autopilot take it to the other side of the planet in about a minute.
Power returns to the engines of the RSI Aurora MR as the ship exits quantum travel. The Sky Citizen rolls their ship around and flies to the mission location. They warily approach and check that the facility anti-air turrets are not targeting the ship. The RSI Aurora MR is a sturdy, well-made ship, but it would not last long against the overwhelming firepower of facility anti-air turrets. Fortunately, the facility anti-air turrets do not target them, and the Sky Citizen nestles the small ship down among the cargo containers next to the facility entrance.
The Sky Citizen climbs out of the pilot seat, opens the ship inventory, pulls out a set of armor and weapons, and inspect them for wear and tear. The gear is good enough for at least one mission, and the Sky Citizen dons the armor, weapons, and a couple of medpens. They exit the ship and walk to the nearby underground facility entrance to take the elevator down to the facility.
A rumbling elevator comes to a stop, and the Sky Citizen steps off into the first room of the facility. Doorway by doorway, corner by corner, the Sky Citizen clears the facility and picks up ammo and a new weapon from the downed enemies. As the last enemy falls, a notification on the Sky Citizen’s mobiGlas lets them know that the mission is complete and they receive their payout.
The busy day ends and the Sky Citizen flies to New Babbage, the main city on microTech, to purchase provisions. Then it’s back to the wilderness and another day of adventure for our example Sky Citizen!
